During the 20th Century, new building technologies began to transform the urban landscape. With the advent of air conditioning, fluorescent lighting, structural steel, and reflective glass, it became possible to construct enclosed glass and steel structures that could be heated and cooled with massive HVAC systems, thanks to the availability of cheap fossil fuels.

But progress had its drawbacks. Not only were the aesthetics of architecture often diminished, the impact of these new structures upon their occupants and the surrounding environs was largely ignored in the pursuit of bigger, better, cheaper construction. Decades passed before the toll of poor indoor air quality and toxic building materials was recognized.

“Green building” is not simply a “trend du jour” to protect and preserve the environment. It's a smart, new way of approaching construction that improves the quality of life and the Earth itself and, ultimately, is cost-effective as well.
